“Birches” is the name for our counseling practice because it is symbolic for how we can react to the world around us:
Birch trees are usually found in parts of the world where they endure snowy, icy conditions for part of the year. When they are covered by heavy snow and ice, birch tree trunks and limbs can be bowed down, reaching toward the ground. They bend, but they do not break. When the sun shines again and the ice and snow melt, the birches right themselves - standing tall and strong, once again. When going through difficult times, we may feel as if we will break. We may be bent, and further than we would like to be, but we don’t have to break.
The color of birch tree leaves become more intense after sharp frosts. After we work through something difficult or painful, we can often come out of it feeling stronger, wiser, calmer, etc.
You’ll see in the above video that even the wind makes the birch trunks sway, unlike most other tree trunks which will stay sturdy and firm. But they are not broken by the wind. They sway. They are resilient, just as we are. The video can also be a soothing, calming sight and sound: take a moment to enjoy.
